2005 $25 Perth Mint Gold Sovereign ProofItem code: MMP116
The precursor to the Perth Mint Sovereign series the first began in 2009, this gold coin was actually issued four years earlier. Struck by The Perth Mint in 2005, this special edition was created in honour of the 150th Anniversary of the first Sydney Mint Sovereign way back in 1855! Using the exact same reverse design as struck on that first Australian coin, the 2005 coin has one major advantage – its struck in Perth’s premium proof quality! Without doubt the pre-eminent precious metal experts in world minting, The Perth Mint’s version of the Sydney Mint reverse looks beautiful.
Adding further prestige to the presentation, this sovereign is housed in the front cover of a most informative Perth Mint publication called “Australia’s Sovereigns”! An interesting read for anyone interested in Australia’s coinage history, each of the 90-odd pages is crammed with information starting with the discovery of gold, all the way through to the cessation of gold sovereigns in 1931.
There may be many modern collectors who did not even know this coin existed. And its no wonder, it took us many, many months just to find one example! Originally slated for a maximum mintage of 7,500 coins, only 3,909 coins made it from the presses. Perhaps that is why they are so scarce today. More likely, its because anybody who owns one, does not want to part with it!
