1918 St George Gold Sovereign EF-aUncItem code: MMP459
100 years on, one can scarcely imagine the desperation and despair as 1918 began. The War in Europe had been waged since late 1914 and horrifyingly, millions of lives had been lost. Providing hope, by the end of the year, fighting had mostly ceased and an Armistice signed, declaring victory over Germany.
These gold sovereigns here were struck and issued in this most volatile and globe-changing year. Produced by all three mints that year- Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth – it is humbling to imagine the horror that Australians felt and then, ultimately, one presumes, the terrific optimism for the future as 1918 closed out…
Each genuine gold sovereign available here was struck at either the Perth or Melbourne Mint in 1918. Each is graded between EF and about Uncirculated.
